Don't be afraid to water it. I've seen the same kind of brown colour in Gasteria, in which case it indeed indicates the need for water. Aloe vera becomes orange under intense sun, not brown.

Does this apply to a standard Aloe Vera plant? I bought one from a house indoor green house and it's looking a bit darker in the ends than any I've had before. I've not watered it since I've had it home in case its had too much water
