A scale infection has been discovered. The invaders have been chewing the stem bases. I have promptly responded with a routine sousing of isopropyl alcohol.

No, it is something called 'scale'. They have multiple life cycle stages, so it may appear as though your plant has several different infestations.
They don't move around and turn into mush when soused with alcohol.
